My 365 Project is ... COMPLETED!

Photo 365: Today is a special day - the last post for my project... picture #365. I did it - I actually took and posted 365 pictures in one year to the day. A year ago I read about this 365 idea, and thought, hey why not try to take a picture for one day for the entire year? It was exciting, a new challenge, but I never thought how the project would take over and change me as a photographer, an artist and even as a person.

I did a little off roading in Alaska to get that perfect shot of a mist-covered bridge, rode a camel to capture the Pyramids, climbed security fences to shoot graffiti, and learned how to use a tripod and shoot amazing firewors. I saw colors, shapes, people and places through a lens, and everything around me changed with that. You see images and ideas where you never think to look, and learn so much more about your surroundings and the magic that is a city, a field, a beach and even an empty baseball stadium. Speaking of baseball, I was hit by one (twice), braved a snowstorm to find snowmen, and apparently stalked dogs throughout the city - all in the name of photography. I got lost in Lake Tahoe, looking at the water and beautiful scenery as a thunderstorm was rolling in. I walked around an old castle with perfectly groomed gardens and saw my city - NYC - from every angle that you can think of. I look back now and remember chasing down watertowers all over the city, riding a ski lift up and down to get the mountains just right, and learning about the rule of two thirds. I remember shooting my 100th picture, and how amazed I was that I got this far already, and then scared at the same time, because I still had 265 pictures to go, and it seemed so far away. Most important, I am thankful that I had this awe-inspiring, breathtaking, exhausting and fulfilling experience. There were times when I just didn't want to pick up Pedro anymore, because I was pictured-out, and I didn't want to go out and look for another image, but I dragged my sorry butt off the couch, and went outside anyway. Why? Because this project important to me, I had something to prove, and I'm a competitor, and didn't want to fail . I persevered, with some not-so stellar images (i.e. those long, dreary days in January), some great shots that I'm very proud of, and Pedro a little more used and abused but still my steady sidekick. My project is done, and I'm sad, but feel very accomplished. I did it!

Here's a last image (for this project) that I absolutely adore. I hope you like it! And always remember, no matter what the goal is - big or small - embrace the challenges and obstacles, because if you put your mind and heart into it, anything is possible.

P.S. Stay tuned for my new "100 Moments in Photography" project. Project365 inspired me so much (along with the book, Half the Sky), that I decided to do a fundraiser... for what and why you'll have to just wait and see. I'll keep you posted and will sharedetails in the coming days, but needless to say, I'm very excited about this new step for a good cause.

Photo 362 - 364: Today is Father's Day, and Candice, Guy and I went to Philly to spend the day wandering around the Italian Market getting ribs (and Yak steak), smelling the flowers and getting foot massages. Well, Candice and Guy did... I squirmed in pain just looking at them. Ugh... too much pain, too much pain.

I hope all the great dads out there have a fantastic day, especially Guy, who deserves all the love in the world for being such an amazing dad to me and Candice!

Photo 360 - 361: I drove down to Reading this weekend to spend time with the Fam for Father's Day and went to see the Reading Phillies play a hometown game. They won in the last inning (yeah!) and we got to see some of the prettiest fireworks I've ever seen. Pedro was of course by my side (MINUS a tripod), so I balanced him on a contraption made up of my purse, two stadium seats and a soda cup... for a tripod. Go figure. Here's what I captured, that's the best I could do due to the circumstances I've found myself in AGAIN...

Love in New York City

Photo 359: I've never actually seen this "Love" landmark, but stumbled upon it the other day, so I couldn't resist. It's corny, but I had to. hahaha The hopeless romantic side came out in me, but in my defense, Brandon makes me giggly and mushy... so it's HIS fault. lol It's still pretty cool, and definitely one of the images everyone thinks of when they think NYC iconic images.

Photo 357 - 358: Last time I was in Florida, Brandon and I visited a beautiful private lighthouse. We missed the tour, but Pedro's telephoto lens still was able to get up close and personal. It's only the second lighthouse I've posted during the project timeframe. SO I'm pumped!

Photo 348 - 349: We (Brandon and I) strolled around Manhattan this weekend, and went to the MOMA to see the Henri Cartier-Bresson photography exhibit. It was amazing. What a talent that man had. I want to get some of the prints that we saw for the apartment. :) After the exhibit, we made our way down to the little courtyard garden, and people watched a bit. It was a beautiful day, and the reflections in the windows were crystal clear. Here's the view you have when you look up ... and over. Pretty cool, no?

Granted, these aren't "pretty" due to the graffiti, but they're definitely interesting and they frame nature trying to break through. And nature isn't the only thing trying to break through, just look at the sunbeam... I couldn't have staged it any better.

Photo 339 - 341: Hm... Looks a little scary, no? lol But here is the fence I climbed, and the shrubs I escaped. It's amazing how these grounds seem to set themselves apart from the rest of the neighborhood. Birds chirping, leaves blowing around and bees buzzing, but surrounded by these ruins.

Photo 330 - 331: After getting a tornado warning, climbing a fence, fighting off bugs and spiders and then chit chatting with a very nice police officer about trespassing (kidding lol), I made it back home with these photos of the old and abandoned Brooklyn Waterworks. I loved this site... the weather was perfect, blue skies spotted with clouds, and a little spray paint to give this burnt out landmark a little color. Needless to say I was in photographer heaven. I'd love to do a cool portrait session out here, but when I mentioned that to one of my coworkers, she thought I was insane. lol I just KNOW that the right person with the right dress would equal amazing pictures. I'll be posting all week about the great shots I found at this site each with its own angle and edge.

Photo 327 - 329: I'll be off in a few minutes to grab some shots of the Brooklyn Waterworks since I procrastinated yesterday, but I found some more watertower pictures that I didn't post either. Is this becoming habit? Hm... I have a few weeks left with Project365, and I definitely don't want to slack off now. It's easy to do that though since I'm sooooo close. I realize I won't achieve my total 365 photos, but I'm pretty darn close. *glow* I blame the incessant winter in NYC... AND I missed two huge snow storms where I could have dug myself out and conquered Central Park and Prospect Park for some great shots. Oh well, excuses aren't gonna cut it. Let's see what the next few weeks bring. :)

FYI If anyone has some good suggestions about discounted (less than $20) photo books, let me know. I'm trying to get a coffeebook going with some of these images (about 200 images) to jumpstart my fundraising project. It's a long story, and I'll get into more detail later, but I want to sponsor a young student in Cambodia for a year. I was so inspired by Half the Sky that I thought, hey, why not? I'm almost done with Project365, so why not put these images to good use... If you haven't read the book, please pick it up. It was amazing, haunting, life-changing and so inspiring that I couldn't put it down - I laughed and cried on a subway every day until I finished it. lol

I don't know why that happened, but I corrected my little snafu (sp?) and continue with my photo hunt this weekend. Long Island + Brooklyn Waterworks here I come. Can't wait to see what shots I see. :)

These pictures remind me a little bit of Hallstadt in Austria - minus the sunshine. I can't wait to go back and see it with a little sunshine thrown in. When Candice and I were there in 2008 we froze, got rained on and were just absolutely cold. All the wine and schnitzel helped though! lol

And let me just add that if I EVER tell anyone that carrying around a tripod is too much work... hit me. Seriously! This was another instance where I really should have had my nifty - yes I said nifty - tripod with me, because finding a flat and stable surface on a beach that lets you capture the perfect shot isn't always the easiest thing to do. Hm... reminds me of my aggravation at Luxor Temple in Egypt. No tripod either! I sense a trend here. lol

Photo 322: Happy Memorial Day! I would post some holiday-ish/theme-related pictures if I could, but I left my laptop at home in NYC, and I'm still in FL enjoying a sunny weekend with my honey. Fortunately, I stole his computer to at least keep up on my posting.

I call this Beach With a View - the lonesome cloud framed by a sandy archway. hahaha Can ya tell I'm falling short on title creativity? I swear I didn't photochop this cloud into the picture, altered it in any way or cleaned up the shot. All I did was crop a bit more, and sharpened the photo a tad. The colors were shot as is... and what a "cute" moment this was. lol Brandon just rolled his eyes at me and kept on walking down the boardwalk. I still think it's cute. Sue me, I'm a girl... :P

A Palm Tells a Story

Photo 320 - 321: After leaving Reno, I flew down to Ft. Lauderdale for Memorial Day Weekend to spend some quality time with my honey. We drove down to Hallandale Beach to catch some live music at night, and Pedro of course was not far behind. The sun was almost done shining it's happy rays on us, and I got some great evening shots of some very pretty palm trees and white sandy beaches. Doesn't it make you want to just watch a sunset? Sigh... can I transfer the weather and the FL beaches to NYC? I'm getting spoiled down here...

Photo 317 - 319: As I'm driving down south to see what this "Lake Tahoe" nonsense is about, I see little areas to pull over all over the place, but I kept on driving... and then this view opened up (first picture). I couldn't believe it, so I did a slightly legal U-turn, and shot a picture of this breathtaking view. The great thing about this area is that there are many landmark signs, so it's not that difficult to get that panoramic shot even if it means climbing some rocks or in my case, balancing on some very unsteady boulders to get that perfect picture.

Photo 305: Who doesn't love sunshine? After a week of freezing temperatures in NYC (yes I said FREEZING) I flew down to Florida to catch some rays and get some much-needed hugs and love. After an eight-hour travel "mishap" where I had to deal with 2.5 hours in a cab to go to the airport (regular travel time is 40 min.), an hour delay before we boarded (a given since it was the JFK airport), two MORE hours on a parked plan AT the gate without any lights on, and then another half an hour taxiing on the runway to take off... I finally arrived at Brandon's house at 1 in the a.m. Can you say long?? At least I got some beach time in the next day... I needed the sunshine!

What Happened to Summer?

Photo 304: Now that the air has turned fall-ish again (what???), and I'm wondering if we skipped ahead to NOVEMBER, I also realize that this is the time where the air is crisp, and so are the pictures. My company just moved to midtown Manhattan, and this (see below) is what I get to walk by every morning. It's quite the atmosphere change, from a busy beehive of disgruntled New Yorkers shoving aside tourists in Grand Central to a more relaxed Park Avenue-ish area where you can find the cutest little Italian wine bar just around the corner right across from a vegetarian Indian restaurant. It's crazy, it's loud, it's wonderful -- all wrapped up into one beautiful adventure.

Looking Back to NOLA

Photo 301 - 303: Here are a few more shots from my NOLA visit. One thing is for certain, I have to go buy a gorilla tripod for my mini trips. That would have helped me out a lot during my last vacation. I even looked at them at B&H Photo (any photographer's gear mecca), but didn't buy one... don't as me why.

Nothing much else to report today, but that I'm planning on some "sexier" photos soon i.e. NYC at night, perhaps a model shoot or even some Miami at night photographs. Now THAT'S a great idea... For now, take a look back at what New Orleans has to offer -- a lot of history.

The Big Easy

Photo 300: I debated, and debated, and debated what my 300th picture should be, and picked this one from my trip to New Orleans a few months ago. I've been wanting to post it, and I wandered around NYC today to get my newest photograph, but nothing struck me quite like this one from the Big Easy. This was the first time I've been back post-Katrina, and it was eye-opening and a bit sad to see that this once gorgeous area hasn't yet recovered fully. The French Quarter has been cleaned up of course, but I remember the surrounding areas to be lush, and beautiful, but after taking a drive to the countryside, it wasn't like that anymore. More to come from this trip, but it's my 300th picture, people!

Photo 297-298: As my long list of Egypt photographs are now coming to an end, and I am nearing the 300 mark, I'm pumped. I can't believe I'm almost done with this photo venture. I'm pretty close to my 365 number, of course a bit behind, but the Egypt adventure helped. I've got some FLL time coming up, and of course I wandered around NYC yesterday during lunch and took a few shots, so let's see. I've got Long Island, NY, and Reno, Nev., (anyone know what's there?), coming up for a businnes trip in May, and then I go to Arlington, Tx., and San Antonio in June, so I should be able to get some more great shots before my deadline is here and gone. Cross your fingers for me!

Meanwhile, this is the Alabster Mosque with its beautiful spires and delicately crafted windows overlooking the Cairo skyline from the Citadel.

Something Blue... or Pick a Color

Photo 292 - 296: Strolling around the streets of Aswan or taking a nap on a cruise balcony gives you such a different view of the world around you. All week I kept tripping over everything - my own two feet, a curb, a chair - but only (!!!) because I kept looking UP to see what the next shot was going to be. Some believe I have a crooked walk (:P), but I like to think that it keeps me "falling" into places I would not otherwise see. lol I survived a boat, a camel, a cab ride and a train without major injury, and captured these images early at the crack of dawn, at high noon, and as the sun was going down - all with vibrant colors at the core.

A Weekend and a Wedding

Photo 286: We interrupt the scheduled programming to bring you this image of upstate New York... I went to a beautiful wedding this weekend, and despite a two-hour delay due to a bus getting lost with 30 wedding guests, the sun was shining, the birds were chirping, the weather was perfect, and the bride even prettier. The great thing about there being a delay though was the beautiful sunset! THIS was the backdrop not only to the ceremony, but the pictures the bride and groom took afterwards. It couldn't have been any more amazing...

A Little Night Magic

Photo 281-285: Thank God for flat surfaces, otherwise I would have cried. I didn't take my tripod with me on this trip, so various chairs, trash cans, and banisters provided me with a steady surface, and I even got to educate my fellow travelers on a little trick called "no flash + timer = happy photographer" mode. lol

Still, magic hour... twilight hour... It's the same no matter where you go, but when you're surrounded by pyramids, temples and the City of Cairo, there's something indescribable in the air.

Felucca Cruisin'

Photo 276 - 280: I keep talking about this infamous nile cruise and felucca ride... and I have to tell you, it was truly my favorite part of the trip. The pyramids, temples, caves, museums etc. were great, but the felucca ride to a botanical garden on a small island was breathtaking. It was so peaceful with the wind playing with the sails, the waves rushing ahead to lead the way, and the sun rays reflecting off the water. We started out in Aswan, and spent the whole afternoon taking pictures, relaxing, and taking in the most amazing views I have ever seen. What a relaxing feeling - there's nothing like it in the world.

Photo 271 - 275: I've been back for a few days now, and finding it still difficult to become adjusted, but all in due time, I guess. A week ago I was floating down the Nile, so work/office stress and politics isn't something I really want to indulge in right now. lol I'd rather reminisce about the Citadel, and the peaceful feeling this beautiful mosque gave me.

Home Sweet Home

Photo 266 - 270: I am back home from the Land of the Pharaohs, and what an amazing, crazy, revealing, romantic and exhausting adventure it was. Cairo was dirty, loud and dusty, but the history, warm nights, and lively energy swept you away along with the calls to prayer that echoed throughout the city. I have to admit, Cairo was my least favorite of all the places we went with our tour group (CONTIKI I miss you...), but it's still Cairo where you can see a donkey cart rolling down the street alongside a BMW. Where a goat and a chicken share a rooftop with the silver moon hanging over a mosque, and peddlers sell you jewelry, hookahs and spices in the bazaars. It's a city of contradictions with a forward thinking generation held back by more and more conservative ideologies, but where the history of the ancient past is still ingrained in every tradition and custom.

Our first "full" day was spent roaming around the Egyptian Museum, the Pyramids, the Sphinx and we took a camel ride through the desert which was awesome. To see all of the wonders and monuments up close and personal is mind-blowing. And this blond history geek was in heaven! I felt so fortunate to be there, and had to close my mouth throughout the day, because it kept hanging open. lol Here are a few pictures from this week... And no, camels don't spit unless provoked. ;) Egypt is definitely a trip that is a must on anyone's list. Just make sure you have a lot of bakshees on hand or just learn how to say, "La, shokran."

Photo 264 - 265: As I am preparing for my big Egypt trip - i.e. get new camera bag, clean Pedro, charge batteries, etc. - I decided to walk around NYC today to catch a few shots. I just got Pedro spotless, and the pictures were so nice and crisp. I was thrilled. Well that was after I had to go back TWICE to the repair shop to make sure the cleaning was done well... too many specks on my lens and sensor! Eventually, Pedro was perfect... and this girl was a happy camper. What a beautiful day today!

I'm off to Egypt on Friday, so this blog is officially on vacation! I might still have time to post some tomorrow, if not, CIAO until a week from now. :) Get ready for some camel and pyramid shots...

Photo 263: We're moving this week (we as in my company), and I've been crazy packing while planning a pr campaign for a new web site we are launching, so it's been a bit nuts. lol I was down in Florida this weekend (yeah!!), and didn't want to leave. It's so pretty down there! I'm ready for more palm trees and pretty weather.

I'm also getting ready for my Egypt trip, so I've been making lists of things to pack, buy and not forget. Whew... it's going to be amazing!

Photo 259-260: I recently discovered an amazing photographer, Gary Heller, who inspires so much creativity in me, and who's work is exceptional. It doesn't hurt that he's a New Yorker and loves to roam around anywhere that is interesting, dark and "different." I've climbed fences, balanced on garbage cans, "let myself into" abandoned buildings, escaped a German shepard bent on destruction and fought poison ivy to get a perfect shot, so I only admire that drive and dedication. A little adrenaline goes a long way. lol

But back to something more sane. He did a series of photographs of New York watertowers, which are fantastic, and have even been featured in "V," so I decided as I was roaming around Union Square, that I was going to do the same thing. I had been looking up to see how many watertowers I could find - there couldn't be that many, right? - and I saw ten, all over a two block radius. I hate to copy anyone's work, and I've been struggling with doing this for that reason, but I caved in, because it's such a great idea and concept. Here is the first part of a three part series of NYC watertowers - with all the props/kudos going to one of my favorite photographers.

Note: Lesson learned, ALWAYS look up, you never know what's in the sky...

Between traveling to a NUMBER of places, and being a little photographed and photochopped out, I haven't had time to really concentrate on any of the number of projects I've wanted to work on. Photo 233: When I was at the Chinese New Year parade a few weeks ago, small little gifts, candy and good luck beads were thrown into the crowd from the floats passing by. These little kids kept trying to grab more things and reaching over as far as they could to get at the presents. Unfortunately, the people handing out the gifts ran out of the cool stuff, and as you can see, there was some major indignation and disappointment to be seen on these little faces. I am happy to report though, that the frowns later turned upside down with balloons and candy.

Photo 215 - 219: I've been on the road for work for the last week, acting as field director at spring training camps for a video interview shoot with some pretty cool baseball players. I roamed around baseball fields in Arizona and Florida with all-day, entire field access, and gave Pedro a workout all the while soaking up the sun. I had to deal with F-16s doing a training run over my interview site, got hit by a baseball! and told numerous maintenance guys to stop mowing/blowing/and sweeping the facility because of noise distractions. My crew was amazing, absolutely hilarious and dealt with every pitfall, delay and "wind annoyance" with ease and banter. We all "nibbled like deer" on our power bars, and wolfed down burgers and fries at night like grizzlies. lol Inside joke, but funny story for a later day!

After three days, I was prepped and ready to go back home, but I was informed by my airline and a few of my family members and friends, that Florida and Arizona are a thousand times better than the "storm of the Century" the East Coast was experiencing. This time the storm did NOT miss New York, but hit it dead on... and I couldn't get back, so I got rerouted to sunshine, beautiful water and an unexpected twist of events that promises to be one amazing/beautiful/crazy adventure. <3 So, here are a few pictures of my idea of perfection. :) Along with a pelican that wanted to make me his friend, and a sunset that I won't ever forget.

Photo 207: Since the sun was shining today, I decided to throw some color on my blog, and post another graffiti picture. Remember my first "official" photo for this blog? It was my first little step on the journey I call Project 365. Maybe it will wind up as a pair that's framed for my my photo exhibition over the summer. More details to come, but it's going to be for a good cause, and lots of exciting things are in the works.

Nothing much else to report, I'm off to Phoenix for work in a week, and then on to Tampa and New Orleans in the two weeks following, so my life should be a bit more busy than the last month or so. I'm scouting photo locations of course, and since I'm managing a MLB Players interview shoot, I might add a few Yankee spring training pictures, if they let me take Pedro into the facility. Can anyone say ... JETER?!?! lol I know one of my friends who absolutely adores him, and she's offered to hold his towel for the three days that I'm down there with the video crew. hahahha My favorite Yankee is no longer a Yankee, so I have no eye candy at all. Then again, so pumped about these interviews! What a great project to manage. And being surrounded by baseball players all week isn't a bad way to spend some time in the sun either. lol

Photo 200: I can't believe it, but I finally reached my 200th picture! YEAH!!! Granted, I'm a little behind, but I'm trying to catch up. I kept debating what my milestone picture would be today, and I just had to pick this one. Every time I look at it, it cracks me up, the puppy's face is just priceless. You can just see the uncertainty and mistrust in his eyes... it's hilarious. He's almost saying, "Excuse me, uh, what are you doing? Gulp!" What you don't see is how three seconds later, he dog-handled the black dog into the ground, and then chased him all over the doggie park. Go figure! Hope you love it as much as I do.

Photo 196 - 197: We've been hit by a snowstorm, but it's nothing compared to what DC and Baltimore have to deal with. I looked at pictures this morning, and they really got snowed in. It's crazy how much snow they have to deal with. We got a few inches, but also have to deal with the arctic wind that is causing frostbite all over the place. It's FREEZING outside. The gray and cloudy skies aren't helping either. I dug out my car though, and managed to grab some shots along the street and highway. I'm all stocked up on groceries, and now bumming around on the couch. I refuse to go outside today... it's just too crappy.

As a sidenote, anyone a fan of this new blog editor? I changed back to the old one, because, quite frankly, the new one seems to be very outdated, and has less features i.e. multiple uploads, color schemes, picture sizes, etc.

Dumbo

Photo 193 - 195: As I was walking around Dumbo, I saw these seagulls just hanging out on the shore right next to the Manhattan bridge. I looked over my shoulder, and there was a stunning view of the old Brooklyn Bridge. It's amazing what you can see when you take a quick stroll around Dumbo. And speaking of typical sights, this Firehouse door is exactly what I've been looking at all day. Two minutes after I took the shot, our dedicated NYC firefighters sprung into action, and hurled themselves and their engine down the road to cover some kind of emergency. Speed and safety to them!

Photo 190 - 192: As promised I went photo hunting today with my friend, Luca, and as I woke up and looked at the temperature outside, I realized it was 15 degrees. So I bundled up with a scarf, a hat, some gloves, and a down jacket, and headed out to the Brooklyn Promenade and Dumbo. I have to say, Luca and I were champs, because it was FLIPPING FREEZING! We ate and drank all day long, because we kept making pit stops every half an hour or so to de-thaw. lol But I got some great pictures, some great memories, and I even attempted some fence climbing. It didn't work out in my favor at the end, but at least I know I still have some mad climbing skills from my childhood - even though the flexibility is not quite there anymore.

Photo 188-189: What to say. Well, I heard something quite "interesting" yesterday. I was having a conversation with a painter - and I honestly use that term loosely - and he told me that art is always planned, and that no medium is left to chance, and no art is original. He also thought that photography was nothing but using photochop, and a person behind the camera is not an artist since they aren't creating anything new. As I resisted the urge to slap him into next week, I "demurely" disagreed, and yes, almost called him an idiot, but my tact/manners prevailed. I informed him that no matter what inspires you and how you choose to express yourself, it's in the eye of the beholder. Sometimes you see what's already there and interpret it in a different way, sometimes you imagine something and then try to capture it on canvas or in a print. I think true creativity comes from being open to your surroundings and then letting yourself be inspired - even by the smallest, most insignificant things. If your heart starts racing, your mind starts flowing and you're using your artistic eye, you're creating something unique, that's only yours. And "paint the numbers" is not art, unless you go outsides the lines. ;) That should have been one of my answers for Mr. Louvre. lol

My Blue Phase

Photo 185-187: I took Pedro with me today, hoping to be inspired. Along the way, I was happy to report some amazing blue skies peeking through some ominous clouds. After yesterday's torrential downpour, I was happy to see that I didn't need my umbrella today. Whew... Swimming home from the subway is really not a lot of fun. I pointed Pedro at some trees as well, the contrast there is just so pretty. But the coolest shot today (the third one) was as I was waiting for the train to take me into the city. The shadows and the turquoise bluish color just completed my little blue collage of photographs. I know, I know, I'm reaching, but I'm also trying to get creative, which is very hard when no one is doing anything, and I'm either travelling or just plain lazy. I do have my first portrait session this weekend. Let's hope I get some great shots in, and send me good photographer karma. I'm a bit nervous.

Photo 169-172: It's a new year, a new page, and hopefully new pictures to go around. I've literally been unplugged for about two weeks now, no uploading, no photochopping, no posting. Pedro has been used and abused a bit though. He got snowed on, rained on, cursed at and praised, so needless to say he's been busy. I was home for the holidays with a little mountain/ski resort/breathtaking scenery action thrown in, and I came back with a few extra pounds, a few bruises (go figure), new experiences and personal insights, and some really cool pictures. It was a long road in 2009, and now that I am back in my city, I'm ready to start 2010.

I wish everyone all the best this year with health, love and happiness abound - we've all earned it and deserve it. And remember, "In the end, it's not going to matter how many breaths you took, but how many moments took your breath away."

First Snowfall of 2009

Photo 163-168: After digging my car out of about one foot of snow, and accelerating around a few sharp corners and consequent "wohooo" slides, I went Christmas shopping this morning. It was very quiet and beautiful outside, because New Yorkers, even after monstrous snowfalls in years past, still seem to think that a foot of snow is a lot. By the time I dug out my car (approx. 10:30 a.m.) the roads were starting to be cleared. I loved it! My little Jetta is a trooper in the snow, and LOVES, and I repeat, LOVES slippin' and slidin' around the streets - all of course with due safety considered.

After not buying one present, because all the stores I went to were closed due to "the storm of the century," I went home to grab Pedro, and proceeded to see what frostbite was like. I hate taking pictures with Pedro while I'm wearing gloves, so needless to say, the 25 degrees plus the icy wind that decided to start up just as I was leaving the building almost helped me with said frostbite. I was going to drive to the park, take great pictures, but it was so cold, I ran around my neighborhood trying to capture some great moments like little kids building snowmen, having snowball fights, building forts... I found ONE snowman, and even he looked miserable in the cold weather. I guess I could have dragged my sorry butt to Central Park, but driving an hour into the city (probably longer with the road/traffic conditions) wasn't an appealing thought.

But here are some images from around the neighborhood from our first official winter snow day. The sun came out a little bit, and I even caught a little boy doing his dad's job... shoveling the sidewalk. lol Hope everyone stayed home with lots of hot chocolate, movies and everyone is getting ready for the holidays. I can't wait for it to be Christmas!

Photo 161-162: One of my favorite movies to watch during the Christmas season (go figure) is "Roman Holiday," because I love old Hollywood especially it's stunning actors and actresses such as Audrey Hepburn. Her talent, humor, grace and dignity is something to aspire to, and no matter what role she played in her movies, no matter what age she was or what small wrinkle lined her brow, she was always a stunningly beautiful lady - in every sense of the word.

Christmas in NYC

Photo 151-153: Christmas in NYC is a special time of the year, filled with lots of lights, colors, caroling and random Santas screaming "ho ho ho" at unsuspecting tourists. You feel the chill in the air, smell the roasting chestnuts on the street corner and wait for the first fluffy snow to fall before it gets REALLY cold in January. I spent an hour or so roaming around Rockefeller Center tonight, trying to keep my hands warm, snapping a few pictures for my hungry blog and making a few couples happy as I take their picture in front of the big, red Christmas ornaments. It's been a successful, yet quick evening, and now I'm home thawing out from this chilly evening.

Photo 148-150: So, I think I took off in November from the blogging/photography world for a number of reasons.

1. I had four business trips to go on, and it's been crazy.

2. Thanksgiving rolled around, and I helped/worked in the gallery and clothing store in Lancaster.

3. I had friends visit, and Pedro had to stay home.

4. I am exhausted!

5. Um... did I say I was exhausted?

So I just counted how many pictures I am behind, and I'm not sharing that information. It's actually too depressing, but needless to say, I will be posting two or three for the next couple of weeks... a day! I actually feel very horrible and guilty about slacking off so much. This project does mean a lot to me, and I'm on it again from now on. I actually have a pretty cool project lined up after my 365 project is over, but that will come in time.

Here are a few pictures I took from the air. It was bumpy everyone was sending up prayers, downing wine and calling their loved ones, but I, instead of panicking about the extremely turbulent plane ride/death rollercoaster in mid air, was cursing at the fact that the plane was moving so much and I couldn't get a clear shot out of the window. I tried everything, but what came out of it, is pretty cool itself.

Photo 147: The holiday season has been officially kicked off. Half days at the office - check, Turkey day tomorrow - check, lights and snowflake ornaments all around the city - check! I'm off to PA today, to do some cookin', drinkin' and spendin' time with the family. I know this blog has been hungry for pictures, and I'm a complete slacker, but I have excuses... a long list of them. I've got photo ideas out the ying yang, and will be posting a lot more after this crazy week is over. What's coming up: Nashville, an engagement session, Brooklyn Promenade...

Photo 146: I'm a traveling fiend this week, and feeling a bit like a nomad. So, shine a light for me, I'm back on Sunday night, and staying put for a while. Well, until Thanksgiving next week, and that's to PA to see my best friend and her family. I can't wait for some family time, turkey galore and lots and lots of wine. lol Aaahhh... the holidays. :)

Busy Week of Travelling

Photo 145: I am in to Charleston, WV, today, but I don't have time to take any pictures this time around. I was there for a training last July, and got some beautiful shots of the Capitol. It's not going to be as warm this time around, the forecast says rain, so Pedro gets a rest, and I get to collect some more frequent flyer miles. I'm off to Las Vegas, NV, on Thursday through Sunday, part work, part play. Still debating about whether Pedro is coming with me...

Here's a shot of my favorite building in NYC. I'm working on getting a shot of it at night, but with everything that's been going on, I haven't had a chance to do that yet.

Photo 143-144: "But, DAD, I won't fall in..." I found this little boy trying to sneak past his dad and plunge right into the fountain, but his dad, ever vigilant and apparently without shoes, was Mr. Eagle Eye. The second picture below is a perfect example of how quickly they grow up though. I heard various forms of "dude," "bro," and stories of recently acquired scars and skin gouges coming from these two skaters. I think I even saw a little blood after a not so successful experimental introduction between the skateboard and a railing that was meant to help people UP the stairs, not provide an "obstacle" to flip over.

I'm almost done with Half the Sky, and I'll post a recap of it soon. It's such an inspiration, and I'm trying to think of an event or program I can get involved with that will make a difference even if it's just a little dent in a global problem.

Photo 139: It's absolutely freezing here today, but the Yankees are enjoying their much-earned parade, and I'm stuck at my desk, with twitchy photo fingers, wishing I could be outside clicking away with Pedro. Poor me... At least this image brings me some happy thoughts.

I've also been reading a great book called "Half the Sky," and it's stunning.

Half the Sky is a passionate call to arms against our era’s most pervasive human rights violation: the oppression of women and girls in the developing world.With Pulitzer Prize winners Nicholas D. Kristof and Sheryl WuDunn as our guides, we travel through Africa and Asia to meet the extraordinary women struggling there, among them a Cambodian teenager sold into sex slavery and an Ethiopian woman who suffered devastating injuries in childbirth. Drawing on the breadth of their combined reporting experience, Kristof and WuDunn depict our world with anger, sadness, clarity, and, ultimately, hope. They show how a little help can transform the lives of women and girls abroad.

That Cambodian girl eventually escaped from her brothel and, with assistance from an aid group, built a thriving retail business that supports her family. The Ethiopian woman had her injuries repaired and in time became a surgeon. A Zimbabwean mother of five, counseled to return to school, earned her doctorate and became an expert on AIDS. Through these stories, Kristof and WuDunn help us see that the key to economic progress lies in unleashing women’s potential. Throughout much of the world, the greatest unexploited economic resource is the female half of the population. Countries such as China have prospered precisely because they emancipated women and brought them into the formal economy. Unleashing that process globally is not only the right thing to do; it’s also the best strategy for fighting poverty.

Women facing poverty, oppression, and violence are usually viewed as victims. But this book shows that unimaginable challenges are often met with breathtaking bravery. These stories show us the power and resilience of women who would have every reason to give up but never do. It's an inspiration to me and for anyone who reads this book, and a model for those fighting for justice around the world.

The book is titled after an old Chinese proverb that says, "Women hold up half the sky." We need to embrace that proverb and work together to ensure that women everywhere are able to rise to their fullest potential.

Sunset at the Waterfront

Photo 138: I'm in Valley, Alabama, today for work, and yes it's ... well it's Alabama along with it's southern food and hospitality. I had a great weekend, gave Pedro a rest, didn't get much sleep, did a little Halloweening, ate a ton, in need of a nap, but looking forward to the month of November. I've been itching to post some sunset pictures lately, and my next photomission is to capture the sunset and the NYC skyline, but until I have time to drag my tired butt out to the promenade this will have to do.

Lesson for today: Remember that not getting what you want is sometimes a wonderful stroke of luck, so experience every day with that in mind, and value what great things life can give you.

Photo 132: Walking around downtown and on the High Line gives you quite the different view of NYC. Even though I was a bit disappointed with the High Line, it was still worth seeing.
